Arriving in Delhi 7/19/19

We arrived in Delhi around 2:30pm Delhi time. Customs was a breeze and because Jake was wearing his AES shirt, he was spotted right away by someone named Mohan from the school who was there to pick us up. With Mohan was a driver for a large van that they brought for us. They gave us fresh garlands, a burner phone, SIM card, money in rupees, and dropped us off at the Kumars. We had a shower and then the Kumars had a delicious simple Indian meal for us! 

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Joya’s birthday (she is Vikram’s younger sister, 8 years younger than we are). Ajit Uncle (Mr. Kumar) is going to drive us by our apartment in the morning and then we have various celebration things for Joya today including a dinner! We get to move into our apartment on July 22nd morning and they said there will be food in the fridge for us that day. Orientation activities start July 24th!

Jet Lag Update


At about 6pm, we were exhausted. Jake was falling asleep while talking to me sitting in a chair. He took a nap for about two hours. At 8pm, we had dinner with the Kumars and went to bed soon after. In the morning, we woke up at 6:30am, which was not too bad! It was nice to be up so early.

Sunday, August 4, 2019 We had a chance to get out and see some of Delhi’s monuments on a few occasions. First, Ajit drove us by the Parliament building (above) and the Old Secretariat, which houses some government ministry offices (below). We also took a tour of Gandhi Smirti, which is a museum that was built at the site of Gandhi’s assassination. There is a lot of interesting history on this topic that I’ve been getting from a few diverse viewpoints. A very good history book called India After Gandhi describes Gandhi’s final trip to Delhi. Super short and likely somewhat inaccurate summary (corrections welcome): by about 1946, it became clear that independence was coming to British India, which included modern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Our Neighborhood and Our School

We live in a neighborhood called Vasant Vihar. It's a quiet neighborhood with both Delhi-ites and many ex-pats and embassies as well. It's about a 15-20 minute drive from the school, and we use Uber to get around. Here are some images of our neighborhood and our classrooms!

August and September Summarized 9/28/19

Saturday, September 28, 2019 The school year is off to a great start. Julie is loving kindergarten, and is just getting started with her kathak dance classes. I (Jake) am enjoying 6th grade and am helping out with little league baseball and taking some cricket lessons. We took a trip through our school to a beautiful fort/palace in a town called Neemrana in Rajasthan. The views were really breathtaking and it was good to see a town other than Delhi. A friend of a fellow teacher gave us a tour of the village and a very old step-well. This 17th century (I think) fort/palace was sold in the 80s for $10k to a guy who worked in hotels. Now they do weddings for $60k a pop. Cable television has just been installed in the Emrengels household. It has been nice to be able to watch sports and the news.
