Julie's Jaipur Trip 9/2019






I took a girls trip with three women from work to Jaipur. We stayed at an oasis hotel right in the city, and it was completely magical. The space was quiet, beautiful, full of nature, had delicious food, delicious chai, and lovely staff. We took a long car ride to get there and the two days we were there, we mostly spent outside the city in a town called Bagru, known for block printing. We participated in a block printing workshop where we toured the dying and drying field, learned the process of block printing, and made three pieces of our own. I dyed and block printed a small outdoor rug, a scarf/table runner, and a larger scarf/wall hanging. The printing work was very calming and enjoyable. We also enjoyed some home-cooked meals. We didn't really see much of Jaipur itself on this quick trip, so I'll have to go back, with Jake next time!

Sunday, August 4, 2019 We had a chance to get out and see some of Delhi’s monuments on a few occasions. First, Ajit drove us by the Parliament building (above) and the Old Secretariat, which houses some government ministry offices (below). We also took a tour of Gandhi Smirti, which is a museum that was built at the site of Gandhi’s assassination. There is a lot of interesting history on this topic that I’ve been getting from a few diverse viewpoints. A very good history book called India After Gandhi describes Gandhi’s final trip to Delhi. Super short and likely somewhat inaccurate summary (corrections welcome): by about 1946, it became clear that independence was coming to British India, which included modern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Our Neighborhood and Our School

We live in a neighborhood called Vasant Vihar. It's a quiet neighborhood with both Delhi-ites and many ex-pats and embassies as well. It's about a 15-20 minute drive from the school, and we use Uber to get around. Here are some images of our neighborhood and our classrooms!

August and September Summarized 9/28/19

Saturday, September 28, 2019 The school year is off to a great start. Julie is loving kindergarten, and is just getting started with her kathak dance classes. I (Jake) am enjoying 6th grade and am helping out with little league baseball and taking some cricket lessons. We took a trip through our school to a beautiful fort/palace in a town called Neemrana in Rajasthan. The views were really breathtaking and it was good to see a town other than Delhi. A friend of a fellow teacher gave us a tour of the village and a very old step-well. This 17th century (I think) fort/palace was sold in the 80s for $10k to a guy who worked in hotels. Now they do weddings for $60k a pop. Cable television has just been installed in the Emrengels household. It has been nice to be able to watch sports and the news.
